Optical Fibre Sensing

Research interests include photonic sensing for environmental, chemical and biological monitoring using polymer photonic materials and devices.
Low cost, rugged sensors have been developed for environmental, chemical and biological monitoring, for applications such as:

  • Water process measurements (biofouling and scaling, algal growth. pH, particle concentration, turbidity, water toxicity, fluid flow);
  • Physical measurements (displacement, pressure and strain).
  • Chemical/biochemical  measurements (pH, glucose, enzyme activity, moisture, humidity)
  • Gas measurements (hydrogen, ammonia).

Distributed sensor networks and arrays using optical time domain and tomographic imaging techniques enable two dimensional sensing.
