Looking for an opportunity to combine industrial experience with a research project leading to a doctorate?
This Engineering Doctorate is a four year postgraduate degree programme combining taught modules and a major research project based in industry with both industrial and academic supervision, which is equivalent to a PhD awarding the title “Dr”. The project is concerned with developing an eddy current (EC) technique for the non-destructive detection of cracks, and damage accumulation, in Ti fan blades used in aero-engines.
The work is based in TWI Ltd ECM2, S. Wales, minutes from the M4, within easy access to sandy beaches, beautiful welsh hills and only 30 minutes from the vibrant city of Cardiff. The work will also involve some time spent at the universities for training modules and to carry out relevant research using the facilities available.
The purpose of this PhD is to develop a cost effective multi-parameter physiological sensor that enables researchers to measure changes in to an older person’s activity patterns. The ability to measure physiological parameters over time has the potential to provide further information on the ageing process, which enables these to be addressed at various levels within Biosciences. The PhD project will develop a functional prototype sensor based on optoelectronic and optical fibre sensor instrumentation, capable of defining physiological activity patterns and will provide opportunities to acquire skills in developing technology making this project an ideal platform to progress onto a post-doctoral research career path. It is suitable for a graduate in Engineering or Physical Science with interests in application of technology to bioscience.
