Bo is working on femtosecond laser writing of photonic structures in polymers. He is studying Femotosecond laser induced ablation and refractive index modification of Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). PMMA is of interest, because its cheapness, higher strain and temperature sensitivities, low processing temperature, biocompatibility, and widely used for cores of polymer optical fibres. Refractive index modification structures, such as phase gratings, waveguides, were directly written in bulk PMMA material by fs laser (1 kHz, 400 nm, 120 fs), without the need of pre- or pro- processing.
Bo is now writing up his PhD thesis, and previously completed a MSc in Photonics and Optoelectronic Devices from Universities of St Andrews and Heriot-Watt in Scotland.
